We got back from Mexico about a month ago and it was our first trip as a family of 5! It was the boys’ second plane ride, but longest travel day by far. It was Harlowe’s first ever plane ride and all three kids did amazing!! I was shocked and so proud of them. I wanted to share some of the things we packed for our travel day and then I’ll do a separate post for must-haves for the resort!
THE BOYS (2.5 YEARS OLD)
-their favourite lovey (of course their bun buns)
-PAW PATROL headphones with splitter for the ipad
-kids’ gravol (we didn’t use, but just in case)
-gum for air pressure
-favourite picture book
-no-mess colouring books (we love the ones from Melissa & Doug)
-toy cars (we got them a couple new ones as a surprise on the plane ride)
-umbrella stroller for each
-blanket (airplane naps)
-more snacks than you will ever need … snacks are what saved us!!!
HARLOWE (1 YEAR OLD):
-her own little backpack
-snacks: we love puffs, PC Organic Smoothie Bites (freeze dried fruit puree that literally melt in your mouth), crackers, Love Child Organic pouches with quinoa, fruit, and veggies
-Lovey (pink bun bun)
-stroller (Love our BOB stroller!)
-Muslin swaddle from Aden + Anais (used for blanket and shade)
-touch + feel books (interactive books)
-extra onesies (it was super hot on the plane and we’d brought extra sleepers, but she ended up in just a onesie)
TIM + TAY
long gone are the days where you packed your wallet, passport, and a book to relax with on the plane. Forget the headphones to use when you’re snuggling up to a movie … when you’re traveling with kids and babies it’s all about necessities for survival!
Here’s what we packed:
-anti bacterial wipes (we got natural ones from Superstore)
-socks (no one wants cold feet on the plane)
-gum (hello, bad breath from traveling all day)
-hair elastics/scrunchies (me only obviously)
-Tylenol/Advil/gravol/Midol (for kids and adults just in case … and lucky me to get my period during vacation so I needed all the MIDOL I could get)
- a few kid bandaids (a bandaid fixes literally everything)
-chapstick (airplanes are hella dry!)
-plastic shopping bags for garbage, dirty diapers
-passports + tickets in a separate holder and pocket.
For carry ons: tim brought a backpack (our diaper bag… so handy to be hands free) and I had a large weekender size bag with cross body strap. we also had a carry on full of snacks and “surprises” to keep the kids entertained. for such a long day, we didn’t worry about proper nutrition and screen time. We ate snacks all day long and watched Netflix! The kids did amazing and I don’t feel guilty about our choices :)
WHAT WE WORE: OUR TRAVEL OUTFITS
-top with buttons for easy breastfeeding access
-lululemon pants with side pocket for phone storage
-runners (holy heck we covered a lot of ground and glad I had runners. Plus wanted runners for walks during vacay and I did indeed wear them 3 times!)
-light sweatpants (comfy for plane but not too hot)
-hoodies (again comfy and warm)
-slip on shoes
-sleeper for first flight
-changed into onesie with hooded romper and socks for second flight
-wore onesie only for second flight (it was HOT!)
--TBH I was in charge of myself and the kids for what we wore on the flights so Tim wore what he’d usually wear on a regular day LOL!
HOW OUR TRAVEL DAY WENT:
I was incrediby relieved and happy and amazed with how our travel day went. Since we were up at 4:30 a.m., Harlowe fell asleep immediately on the first flight around 7:00 a.m. She didn’t sleep that long, but it was enough to keep her happy until the next flight. Once we got to Calgary and were having our layover, the boys were excited to just be near planes! We got breakfast, ran around the airport a bit, and rode the new trolley bus thing? That was the highlight for sure. On the second flight, the boys watched Netflix, played with their cars, did stickers, coloured a bit, and of course snacked and snacked! They both had a short nap on the plane towards the end. We got to Mexico around 3:30 p.m., and the next part, getting our bags and customs stuff was LONNNGGGG and tiring. Thanks to the strollers we brought, the kids could hang out in there and we didn’t have to worry about them running off or keep up to us. Then we had a bit of a bus ride and the kids did great on that too. More snacks and lots to look out through the window. Duke also napped on the bus ride!
We were all exhausted from the travel day, but so happy to get to the resort and EXCITED! We literally ate dinner and went to bed. Tim and Jude had a touch of food poisoning the first night which wasn’t fun, but after that it was nice to “settle” into resort life and enjoy the sun for 10 days!
Next blog post will be what we packed for our 10 day stay at the resort! I’ll include what we actually used, what we could’ve gone with out, and things I wished we had brought!
Thanks for popping by!
