Hi, I’m Taylor and I’m obsessed with sleep. If you know me, if you’ve been following my journey, you know how much I value sleep in my house. I want my babies to sleep so that I can enjoy my evenings, and get a good night’s sleep as well. I also dealt with Postpartum Depression and Anxiety, and it really was rooted in sleep deprivation. I knew that I needed to get my babies sleeping so that I could heal myself. But, this isn’t a post about sleep training, instead, it’s about our babies’ sleep environment and things that we use to ensure a great night’s sleep!
Let’s get to it!
DARK ROOM - It is essential to have a dark room for your baby/child to sleep in. The dark releases melatonin which makes it easier for your child to fall asleep and stay asleep! The dark also signals that it is time for bed and time to sleep! We have a pull down black out blind from Home Hardware and also black out curtains from IKEA (the really heavy, thick ones). In the summer, I actually TAPE down the black out blind so that no cracks of light seep in. When we go to Mexico in March, I will be purchasing the Gro Anywhere blackout shade that suctions to any window!
WHITE NOISE - The boys have had a Sleep Sheep since birth and they like the random melody that plays on it. There are 8 different sounds/melodies to choose from. It senses noise and will turn itself back on. You can set it it to play for 20 minutes or 45. For Harlowe, we have the Marpac Dohm white noise machine. It is just an engine that makes white noise (almost like a fan). It is not loud or blaring. I would totally sleep with one in my room too. Not only is the sound soothing, but it blocks out other outside noises (like loud older brothers!). I wish that we had got a Marpac Dohm for the boys, but we didn’t know better and now they rely on their little melody from the sleep sheep. When we go to Mexico in March, I will be purchasing the travel Marpac Rohm to bring along with us!
ESSENTIAL OILS - I love essential oils and have found them so calming and healing in my own life. So, when the babes were old enough, I started using essential oils in a diffuser in their nurseries. We are big fans of Healing Hollow and the ones we use regularly are: Rest Assured, Immune 5, Cough Calm, and Magic Potion. For myself, I love Tranquility and Good Life.
LOVEY - all of my babes have lovies in their cribs: specifically Jelly Cat bunnies given to them from their Auntie. They have attached to these soft bunnies and find them quite comforting for sleep. If they wake up, all they need is their lovey to go back to sleep. They actually each have two that we rotate regularly so that they attach to both!
SLEEP SACK - All three of my babes also use sleep sacks for naps and nighttime sleep. My boys are 2.5 years old and I wonder what I’ll do when they grow out of their sacks!!! Harlowe uses them too and they have really helped my babes sleep through the night. They don’t wake up cold or have blankets all in a bunch. They love their sacks! We love these Aden and Anais sleeping sacks but also have found nice heavy ones (for the Winter) at Winners!
We really do value a good night’s sleep for everyone under our roof and these are things that have worked for us. Some people might think we are too rigid or strict with it, but we have 3 kids that 95% of the time sleep like rock stars for naps and through the night. I know that I do better with consistent sleep: mental clarity and less anxiety/depression. With a combination of a healthy sleep environment, routine, and consistency, I believe that everyone can thrive and be on their way to an amazing sleep! I am no sleep expert in any way, I am just sharing my experiences with 3 kids.
