We have a lot of baby stuff. Too much baby stuff. A lot of stuff we thought we needed, a lot of stuff we wanted, and a lot of stuff given to us. We are SO so grateful to all of our friends and family that gifted us with wonderful items for our babes. They are so spoiled (as they should be ;) ! )
I put together a list of things that were super handy for us when the babes were itty bitty (the first three months)! It was really important to me that we shopped small and local as much as possible. If I wasn't able to get items locally, I at least tried to order them from somewhere in Canada. Pictures and links are included where possible! I also included how many we bought. Some things, two were necessary, and other items, we were able to get away with just one.
Here we go!
BABY WRAP (X2) - These were GREAT for when the boys were super tiny and newborn. We used them for short walks (after my c-section). These wraps are made in Vancouver, BC by a mama and small business owner! They are incredibly soft and stretchy! Make sure to watch the tutorial on how to wear baby! The boys were always super snug and slept most of the time they were worn. After a few weeks tho, I didn't use the wraps because I needed help getting them in, and then of course I have two babes and could only wear one at a time. If I had a singleton though, I would have DEFINITELY gotten more use out of these!
CARSEATS (X2 OBVI) - We went with Britax after doing our research. To this day, we still feel very confident in our choice. Our babes are very secure in these seats and their heads don't wobble around at all! Even on the hospital ride home, a month early, super tiny babies, they were so safe and secure in their bucket seats. We purchased the carseats from West Coast Kids in Calgary, AB.
DOUBLE SNAP AND GO STROLLER (X1) - We COULD NOT find a double snap and go stroller anywhere in CANADA! Isn't that crazy?? So, we ended up purchasing it from Target in the States and had Tim's parents pick it up from AZ (where they Winter) and bring it back for us! We also had to buy a pack of adapters for our Britax carseats. However, this stroller has saved our life. For walks in the beginning, when they were too small for a regular stroller (even with infant insert), we would put them in their bucket seats, snap and go, and off we went! I climbed a LOT of hills in the Joovy Twin Roo! Still now, 8 months later, we used the Joovy multiple times a week for when I am running errands! It is so handy! It comes with a basket in the bottom and FOUR cupholders! Mamas, you wouldn't believe the times I've had all four drink holders filled! Coffee, coffee, and more coffee, and maybe a water! If you're just have a singleton, I believe you can get the single snap and go strollers from almost any baby store!
CARSEAT COVERS (X2) - We purchased two carseat covers from 4Fold Threads. This small business is run by a mama of 4 in Lethbridge, AB. These ALL4ONE carseat covers not only cover your carseat, but can be used as a nursing and shopping cart cover! We used these a TON for privacy (when the boys were sleeping and to keep grabby hands away) and to shade the boys from the sun. They are super stretchy and fit over any type of carseat! I have also nursed them for nursing when I want a bit of privacy or to keep the boys focused on eating (haha). Next, we will be using them in shopping carts to keep the boys were touching and licking the carts! - I believe that you just find her on FB and order through Private Message! Link is below image.
Swaddles (X100 just kidding, but we have quite a few) - our babes did really well when swaddled. They slept in swaddles for the first 4 or 5 months (?) until they started to move around more and wiggle! I love the extra large Aden + Anais Muslin Wraps that getting softer with every wash and use! Not only did we use them for swaddling, we used them for blankets, shade covers, and carseat covers! Breathable fabric!
A GREAT DIAPER BAG (X1) - We splurged and got a LASSIG diaper bag. It is deluxe!! There are so many pockets and compartments! It even comes with a bottle cooler bag, as well as a built-in cooler in one of the pockets. I still keep finding new things about the bag that I didn't notice at first. We ordered our bag through my second cousin at Bellies in Bloom! It's not super feminine, so even Tim will carry it around as a messenger style bag (there are handles and an adjustable strap!)
SOOTHER CLIPS (X4 - 2 per baby) - We didn't get these until the boys were over 6 weeks old, and when we finally got them, I wondered why we hadn't gotten them sooner! They are absolutely amazing! No more picking up the soother from the ground! If you do happen to use these though, just don't use them when your babe is sleeping! Could be a choking hazard! The soother clips we have are made in Vancouver, BC by a mama of two, Glitter & Spice . The soother clips also double as a teething toy, because they are made of silicone and really nice on baby's gums! You may not be into soothers, or your baby might not take one. But, if you do use soothers, get a soother clip, or two, or four! We used them for about 4 months and then stopped when we started sleep training. Soothers saved us sometimes, but our boys are now self-soothers and it works much better! Nothing against soothers though, because we did use them for a short time! :)
WHITE NOISE MACHINE (X1) - Since our boys share a nursery, we just have one white noise machine, The Cloud B - Sleep Sheep, that we purchased locally at Bumble Tree. But, I have also seen them at Babies R Us and Winners. Our boys still use it, the same melody for every nap and bedtime sleep!
BREAST PUMP (X1) - For all of you breastfeeding mamas out there, you may be interested in purchasing a breast pump! It's great for getting (and keeping!) your supply up, have stored milk so other people can bottle feed baby, and having milk in a pinch! We borrowed one from Bellies to Babies in town and couldn't live without it, so we purchased our own. I wanted a small pump that would travel easily and that I could just sit on the couch and pump! We ended up going with the Medela Swing Single Electric Breast Pump. It does the trick, and while I wish it were a double, it does leave me hands free (well one hand anyway!). And I have to say, Kristin Cavallari posted a picture of her using this pump, and it just made pumping look sexy.... even though it's soo far from sexy! I used to pump after every feed, but now I just pump once a day, before I go to bed, so that I'm not engorged in the morning!
BABY SWING (X2 - 1 per baby!) - The baby swings sure saved our lives a few times! Both calming and soothing, the boys often slept and napped in the swings. They would usually fall asleep instantly once rocking! The swings we had also vibrated and played music. One night when Duke would NOT sleep, I slept on the couch, and he slept in the swing for hours. Not recommended, but at this point I was so tired, and I knew it would work, and we both got sleep! While I would've loved to have had a Mamaroo, our budget would not allow us to buy 2! So, we borrowed a Graco one from a friend (the boys loved this one) and bought an Ingenuity CovertMe Swing from Babies R Us.
Those were our top things that really saved us in the first few months! This is maybe only a third of the stuff we have.... Did I mention I am obsessed with bandana bibs and cute onesies and BOOKS?! I will have a post later of all of my favourite items! Also wanting to do a nursery tour soon too! However, I started this blog to write about the tough stuff and more topic based posts, so the next post will be on breastfeeding :)
Oh, my hubs wanted me to mention that you can get SO many of these items used or borrow from a friend! You don't have to go poor buying a crap ton of new items for your babe! We actually bought our breast pump second hand and just sanitized the shit out of it. And like I mentioned above, we borrowed a second swing from a friend! Many items that we have bought since, like exersaucers and the jolly jumper are also second half and for a fraction of the price! Be smart, mamas!
